the human behind the pixels
Designer.
Systems-Thinker
part-time
Monster-maker
I’m Carlos, a Senior UX/UI Designer who’s spent 14+ years making complicated software feel obvious. Nine of those years were deep in B2B enterprise territory, turning dense data models into dashboards people actually want to open.
THE LONG VERSION
I bridge the gap between business strategy and engineering reality and I’ve got the HTML & CSS chops to make handoffs painless.
Most of my career has been spent architecting data-driven enterprise applications: design systems, config tools, job managers, print workflows, the unglamorous machinery that big companies run on. My job is to make that machinery humane. That means user research, discovery sessions, usability testing, and an obsession with reducing clicks, cognitive load, and support tickets. I care about accessibility (WCAG isn’t a checkbox, it’s the point), about component libraries that scale, and about giving developers specs so clean they never have to guess. When a redesign quietly cuts operational costs by double digits, that’s the whole job well done.
HOW I WORK
01
Listen First
Stakeholder interviews and discovery sessions before a single pixel. I want the business goal, the edge cases, and the thing nobody’s saying out loud.
02
Map the mess
Dense data models get untangled into flows, information architecture, and low-fidelity wireframes. Cheap to change, honest about the hard parts.
03
Design the system
Not just screens, but a centralized component library and tokens so the product stays consistent as it scales and teams move fast without breaking things.
04
Test with real people
Usability testing and accessibility checks (WCAG) catch what I’m too close to see. Opinions are nice; observed behavior is better.
05
Hand off clean
Because I write HTML & CSS, my specs speak the developer’s language. Fewer “what did you mean here?” tickets, faster to production.
BEYOND THE SCREEN
Selected Illustrations
When the dashboards are shipped, I make characters. Under the name Qemikal, I draw bold, street art flavored illustrations with heavy outlines, loud color, a little bit of attitude.
It’s not a side hustle so much as a pressure valve, and it keeps my eye sharp: composition, contrast, and confident linework feed straight back into the interface work. Enterprise software could always use a little more personality.
